Lanwatch is a program designed to allow system administrators of
Novell Networks an onscreen interface of their LAN environments.
Minimum Requirements:
An AT-compatible 80286 or better with at least 384K RAM.
EGA Monitor.
Preferred Equipment:
IBM AT-type 80386 running at 16 Mhz or better, a VGA color monitor,
mouse, 2 Megabytes RAM, Advanced Netware 2.15.
BUGS and Problems:
The program will hang if attempted on an 8088/8086 computer.
Sometimes, the buttons ( menu items ) will not work correctly, and when
that happens, The solution to this is to exit to DOS by pressing "Q"
and loading COMMAND.COM again. This may use about 4K. Then try running
the program again. There may be several minor problems as well as those
mentioned here.
INSTALLATION:
This program will operate well on both local hard disk drives, and a
server drive.
Create a subdirectory of your choosing and location.
If you have original disks, make backup copies.
Change to the subdirectory you created, and make sure the following files
are placed in that subdirectory:

If you have the distributed archive version, copy all the files in the
archive to your subdirectory you created.
To run the program, simply type LANWATCH, or use this sample batch file:
Copy con:L.BAT
@echo off
cd\lanwatch
LANWATCH
^Z
The program initially comes up with a list of up to 19 workstations.
This limit is placed due to the number of ICONS. This is the "plainJane"
screen seen when there is no LAN desktop loaded.
The top button bar is self explanatory. ( If a button pushes but does
nothing, that's because I haven't programmed it yet...)
The button bar on the left side is your main work menu. The menu bar on
the bottom has yet to be programmed, however, the "Quit" button and the
"credits" buttons are programmed.
The top button on the left bar does nothing.
The "A" button will prompt you for a LAN desktop.
LAN desktops are made up of four files, workstations, servers, printers,
and cables.
The second button "B" will bring up the "build" section. It is here
where you will design your own desktops.
Buttons 1 through 33 will automatically load LAN desktops called
level1 through level133. Currently, 1 and 2 are the only active buttons.
ICONS:
Icons are located in the file called NOVICONS.ILB. The program used to
maintain this library is included and is called ICONLIB.EXE.
As of this writing, you have to have a file called LANDATA.LOG in the same
directory as LANWATCH.EXE.
BUILD SECTION
In this section, the bottom menu bar is fairly easy to operate.
The terminator button is currently inactive.
The "station", "server", "printers", "cables", "save", "load" , and
"quitBuild" are all active.
The Station and server buttons will automatically place an icon on the
screen. It is important that after loading an icon, you place it
somewhere on the screen other than its' initial location. This is
because the next icon loaded will appear there and icons can get locked
together on top of each other.
Placing the mouse pointer on the icon and pressing the left mouse button
will allow you to "drag" the icon around on the screen.
The printer button will prompt you for an ICON name. The following
printer icons are bundled with the program:
FUJI23NP : 80 column fujitsu printer
FUJI23PT : 80 column fuji printer in green.
FUJIWDNP : wide carraige fujitsu printer.
FUJIWDPT : wide carraige fuji in green.
DESKPT : Deskjet printer in green.
DESKNP : Deskjet printer.
LASERNP : LaserJet printer.
LASERPT : Laserjet printer in red.
Typing one of the above printer icons will load the printer. It is
important to use the correct menu button. Technically, you can load both
cables and printers with both the cables button, and the printers
button, but it will throw off the count of each if you do so.
The Cables button will prompt you for a cable name. The following cables
are bundled with the program:
VC vertical cable HC horizontal cable LHC4 horizontal green
VC1 " " HC1 " "
VC2 " " HC2 " "
VC3 " " HC3 " "
VC4 " " HC4 " "
VC5 " " HC5 " "
Once you have a workstation icon on the screen, you can assign it some
parameters. Whenever the mouse pointer is within the boundaries of an
icon, it can be moved, or you can call up a window by pressing the right
mouse button. You will be prompted for a LAN Network address. This is
the address of the particular cable system this icon workstation is a
part of. Ie, if you have a file server with more than one LAN installed,
make sure you type the correct address. I have two LANS on one server,
AC38A, and AC38A1.
After typing that information, you will be prompted for the NODE address
of the ethernet card installed in the workstation. This is important
that it be type correctly. Upper and lowercase characters are
acceptable.
SAVE YOUR WORK !!!!!!!!!
PRESSING THE QUITBUILD BUTTON WILL EMPTY THE ICON ARRAYS SO SAVE YOUR WORK!
B E F O R E E X I T I N G B U I L D
The ONLY method of saving your work is to press the left mouse button
when over the "SAVE" button bar button.
IF THE BUTTONS DO NOT APPEAR TO PUSH DOWN, QUIT THE PROGRAM AND LOAD A
NEW COPY OF COMMAND.COM. THEN RELOAD LANWATCH.
If you save your desktop as LEVEL1, it can be automatically loaded from
the main menu by clicking on the L1 button.
A sample LAN DESKTOP is included with the program as "LEVEL1".
Dragging an ICON to the "rubbish" can and releasing the mouse
button will delete the icon from the desktop.
ICONLIB 1.0 is included to allow you to create your own ICONS.
You can load a maximum of 8 servers, 75 workstations, 20 printers, and
80 cables into any one LAN desktop.
Once you have completed your desktop and saved it, you can exit via the
"quitbuild" button. This will return you to the main window with the
"plainJane" LAN Scan. At this point, if you saved your desktop as
"LEVEL1" , you can click on the "L1" button and the desktop will
automatically load. In the event you saved it as something else, then
pressing "A" on the keyboard, or clicking on the "A" button will prompt
you for a file name. Type the desired name, and press enter.
Your desktop will load, and if you have type in the NODE AdDress
correctly, the workstations will change from grey to blue. The icon
representing the workstation you are presently working on will turn red.
Clicking on any of the workstation icons will bring up a small window
with the information you typed, plus the login name and the login time
and date of that individual. Clicking on the "up" arrow in the upper
left corner will bring up a full screen window. Clicking on the "down"
arrow in the upper left corner will lower the full screen window.
